Class Takeaway 9/22
Yesterday's class got me thinking more about why I chose the book that I did for the Altered book project. I chose a copy of Twilight for this assignment, mostly because I couldn't think of any book in particular that I hated. Hate is a strong word. But I decided that Twilight represents something in my future field that I'm not a fan of. To me, it always seemed that Twilight was so successful based not on its story or quality of writing but by, essentially, catering to the "lowest common denominator." As a public relations major, I see a lot of catering to the lowest common denominator. It is an effective strategy for what we do and there is nothing nefarious about it (as some people like to believe), however, I've always felt that this concept was lazy and somewhat insulting to peoples' intelligence, as if people are sheep-like enough to buy whatever formulaic garbage you put in front of them. But then, a lot of people bought into Twilight. So whatever.
